The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is conducting an environmental investigation project at the former Heeia Combat Training Camp (CTC) Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS). The site is located on the windward side of Oahu Island, Hawaii. The Heeia CTC FUDS consists of about 200 acres in Heeia Kea and 2,254 acres in Waihee and Kaalaea Valleys, Kahaluu.

Between 1943 and 1945, the U.S. Army utilized this area as an encampment for troops, an ammunition storage facility, a firing range, and as a maneuver and artillery impact area for jungle and assault training.

Currently, the site is largely undeveloped with pockets of residential, agricultural, and recreational areas. In 1994, USACE determined this site to be eligible for the Defense Environmental Restoration Program as a FUDS.

Work at the site is in the remedial investigation phase of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act remedial process. During this phase, contracted field teams will conduct vegetation clearance to facilitate access and use of digital geophysical mapping and handheld metal detectors. The Department of War encourages active community involvement in environmental restoration activities through Restoration Advisory Boards (RABs). A RAB is a stakeholder group that meets regularly to share information and discuss the cleanup process for specific projects. Because a RAB has not yet been established for the former Heeia CTC FUDS, the USACE Honolulu District is periodically reevaluating community interest in forming one while restoration activities remain ongoing.
