Maxine Hamlin Angell was born on Dec. 23, 1929, to Judge Max C. and Minnie Bond Hamlin of Manistee, Michigan. Despite the economic challenges of the Great Depression, Maxine had a childhood filled with small-town activities and adventures. She often spoke fondly of the time spent on her Aunt Nora’s dairy farm in Tustin, Michigan. Maxine attended Western Michigan University and RN training at St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI. She returned to Manistee to work at Mercy-Community Hospital and as a Public Health Nurse. Maxine and Robert Bruce Angell, Sr. were married Oct. 17, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Manistee. They lived in Detroit, Pittsburg and San Mateo, CA. before moving to Hawaii in 1959. The family joined the Church of the Holy Nativity (Episcopal) soon after their arrival and spent several decades as active, contributing members. In addition to their four biological children, Maxine and Bruce cared for and helped raise forty-five foster children. Several of these children had multiple medical and cognitive challenges and Maxine’s devotion to and the nurturing of these children shall remain her legacy. After suffering a stroke in March 2023, her wish was that she could be able to stay in her own home under the care of her daughter Barbara and hospice associates. She passed away peacefully on Dec. 28, 2023. Maxine is survived by her children Patt, Bruce Jr., Michael, and Barbara, hanai daughters Darlene Sakamaki and Trina Wright, ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and all the keiki who spent part of their lives with "MeMe."
