AKIKO (AKI) FURUNO LEU

93, longtime resident of Niu Valley, passed away on January 15, 2021 at the Queen’s Medical Center after a courageous two week battle with Covid 19.

Aki was born the 5th of 6 children to Tamotsu and Tsune Furuno on January 25, 1927 in Honolulu. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1945 and attended the University of Hawaii.

Aki married Chong Fook (C.F) Leu on April 9, 1955 in Boulder, Colorado, where he was attending graduate school. Aki and C.F. had a happy 65 year marriage, where they nurtured a loving family, enjoyed traveling, golfing, participating and volunteering in Lions Club (Pali and Hawaii Kai) activities, and watching many sporting events, especially when their grandchildren competed. She loved to spend time with her family and friends socializing and sharing her baked goodies, and instituted a lasting family tradition of ono Sunday dinners.

Although she always put family first, Aki excelled in her work life, as an employee of Sears Roebuck for over 40 years, retiring in 1987 as the Assistant Manager of Advertising and continuing with her active membership in the Sears Employees Club.

She is survived by husband, Chong Fook Leu; daughters Susan Tyau, Lori (Stephen) Long, Linda (Alan) Uyehara, grandchildren Drs. Nicholas (Monica) Tyau, Shannon (Ethan) Porter, Ryan Long, Jake Long, Reid Uyehara and Chad (Malia) Uyehara, and great-grandchildren Atticus, Bianca, ‘Ailana and Gryffin.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Aki at Kilohana United Methodist Church on December 27, 2011 at 11:00 am. Social distancing will be practiced to protect our kupuna. Vaccination and masks required.
