WALTER HISASHI SHIROMA

Surrounded by his family, Walter passed away peacefully on February 17, 2020. Walter was born on April 27, 1936 in Lahaina to Edna Yoshino Tamayose (Grandma Higa) and Seitaro Shiroma. He has one younger brother, Herbert Hiroshi (Jane) Shiroma. Grandma Higa and her two sons moved to Honolulu. Walter attended McKinley High School but graduated from Castle High School.
On October 16, 1954, Walter married Edna Kealohapauole Ho`okano of Kahalu`u. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Walter was proudest of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as his military service.
Walter enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard, 299 Artillery. In 1967, when the Hawaii Army National Guard was activated, he went to Vietnam where he was Commander of an artillery division. He eventually retired in 1979 from the Guard as a Captain. He then served in the US Armed Forces until he retired in 1996 as a Major. He was proud to serve his country.
Walter is survived by his wife Edna; 5 children: Dawn Naomi Shiroma (Barry) Chang, Stanford Yutaka (Kappy) Shiroma, Vanessa Keiko (Kent) Yamaguchi, Lynn Shiroma, Alicia (Wendy) Shiroma; 14 grandchildren: Midori Ann Shiroma, Tavia (Dean) Oshiro, Kaipo Shiroma, Kealohapauole (Ben) Hirokawa, Aloha Yamaguchi, Kehaulani (Todd) Dickerson, Kaulana (MyLe) Chang, Iwalani (Brooke) Yamaguchi, Dayna (Kahea) Williams, Kapono (Monica) Chang, Ashley Shiroma, Brittney Shiroma, Mahea (Cyrus) Resgonia, and Pomai Brown; 23 great-grandchildren: Manoa, Kekai, Cyrus, Bailey, Mahtai, Brody, Tallulah, Jaziah, Savannah, Olivia, Sophie, Tazdon, Sabastian, Joel, Henry, Marley, Blaise, Bingham, Jonah, Charlie, Lokahi, Ayla, and Ava.

For the health and safety of family and friends, the family will not be having a funeral service. At a later time, the family will have a private military burial at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.
