TERUKO TAKAESU NOTO

Born in 1933 on Maui to Gisho and Tsuru Takaesu. She grew up on the Puunene sugar plantation and was the sixth of seven children. After graduating from Baldwin High School, she moved to Oahu and enrolled in the nursing program at St. Francis Hospital where she earned her R.N. degree. Also at that time, she became a devout Catholic, a faith she practiced the rest of her life. She then attended Marquette Univ. in Milwaukee, WI for a bachelor’s degree in public health nursing.

She met her future husband, Paul T. Noto, in Chicago at a Hawaii Club picnic where mutual friends introduced them. After marriage, the two moved back to Oahu where he opened his first dental practice in Kalihi and she returned to St. Francis Hospital as a nurse. Later, they moved to Kaneohe when he moved his practice to that town. There, they raised a family of two daughters, Paula and Anne, and one son, Christopher.

Terry, as she was known, liked to travel with her husband, visiting most of the mainland U.S., Canada, Japan, Okinawa, China, parts of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. (Their love of travel began on their honeymoon, driving from Chicago to California.) She also enjoyed following Japanese dramas and mysteries on television, and reading. She especially enjoyed going out to breakfast with her many friends after mass each week.

She passed away peacefully on April 28 in the Kaneohe home she had lived in for over 60 years. She was predeceased by her husband and son, and is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Jim. She was buried in a private ceremony earlier this month.
