Gene Wai Doo was born on August 21, 1939 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Punahou School and was an active student-athlete focused on his academics and tennis-winning the Hawaii State Men’s Tennis Championship title in 1956 & 1957. Gene attended Colgate University where he captained the tennis team and added boxing to his athletic pursuits. Transitioning to focus on his career, Gene attended Jefferson Medical College, interned at York Hospital, and did his residency at Ohio State University. Dr. Doo’s medical office was wherever his patients were. For more than 40 years, the otolaryngologist regularly traveled to underserved communities to provide care with humor, kindness, and compassion. He also trained numerous medical students as an assistant professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. As a multifaceted man, Dr. Doo was a lover of food and wine and a qualified sommelier. He brought laughter to all and enjoyed every sip and bite no matter where he was in the world. Dr. Gene Wai Doo, doting husband and loving family man, passed peacefully at home on February 5, 2025.
