We sadly announce the passing of Michael Kazuto Takeno on September 5, 2024. Surrounded by family and friends, Mike peacefully passed away at the Kuakini Medical Center. He is predeceased by parents Yoshiro and Ritsuko Takeno and brother Nobuo Takeno. He is dearly missed by wife Debbie, son Gavin, daughter Tamlyn Watanabe (Joshua), fur babies Piper and Brynn and siblings; June Takeno (wife of Nobuo), Koji (Joyce) Takeno, Yasuhiro (Nora) Takeno, Yoshiko (Wilford) Nakaoka, Linda (Michael) Hirai and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Mike was born on December 20th, 1964 in Kailua and grew up in Kaneohe. He called himself a "latch-key kid" because his parents worked long hours to make ends meet. He was the youngest of 6. He attended Ben Parker, St Ann’s and graduated from Damien Memorial HS. He attended the University of Hawaii where he earned his BA in Accounting and received his CPA license. He worked for Grant Thornton, Shigeji Sato, Hawaii Dental Service, Oracle, Commercial Data Systems and Pacxa. Mike married Debbie (Nakamura) in 1990. Together they raised two children. Many weekends were dedicated to Tamlyns tennis matches and Gavin’s scouting activities. Mike was an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop #181. He also earned a black belt in Aikido and was a volunteer sensei at the Kalihi YMCA. He was an avid UH sports fan holding season tickets for football, basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball games. Mike was diagnosed with idiopathic interstitial lung disease in 2023. As the disease progressed he required the use of oxygen. He was admitted into KMC in late August 2024. The one thing he hoped to do was to attend his daughter’s wedding in October. Unfortunately, this was not possible. An intimate ceremony was held in the hospital so that Mike could witness her marriage. The family would like to thank the medical team at KMC who took great care of Mike and for all they did to make the wedding a memorable one. A special thank you to Respiratory Therapist, Jewel, who spent her day off with Mike to assure his comfort that day. Thank you also to Miki Matsuda, Dietary Manager, Eugene Lee, MD, Pong Sang Chan, MD and Brent Matsuda, MD. Their compassionate care of Mike and the support and encouragement given to the family are greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024 at Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary. Visitation at 5:00 p.m. Service at 6:00 p.m. Casual attire. A more detailed obituary is available on the Nuuanu Memorial Park website.
