MARK T. RICHERT
Mark Thomas Richert, son of Dr. Thomas and Loretta Richert passed away on May 12, 2023 at his home in LaJolla California. He was 83.
Mark was in the graduating class of 1957 at Punahou School and attended Menlo where he earned his BA then he finished at the University of Hawaii.
Mark first went to California on a college swimming scholarship. Upon returning to Hawaii,, he worked at Chuck’s Steak House where he later became a partner with owner Chuck Rolles.
In 1962 after opening his first steak house restaurant in Los Angeles, he moved to the Red Rest in LaJolla and built Chuck’s of LaJolla. Chuck’s was well known for its friendly atmosphere and great Jazz music. Mark built 11 Chuck’s and continued operations through 1992.
During the 70’s and 80’s, Mark would develop another steak house chain known as Red Baron, with locations at general aviation airports in California, Oregon and Washington. However it was Chuck’s LaJolla that he loved the most and stayed with until 1992 when after 30 years, Chuck’s closed its door.
Owning and operating restaurants was not his only passion. An avid athlete, he competed in 3 Hawaii IronMan Triathlons and 27 marathons. For years, he competed in the Bud Light Triathlon series and ran the Western States 100 Mile Run finishing in approximately 24 hours through the snowy terrain of the Sierra’s. He has run the LaJolla half marathon since its conception and swam in the LaJolla rough water event.
After closing Chuck’s, Mark created MT Richert Construction and became a “Go To” business for all types of repairs with a 2-month waiting period.
Mark loved to dive for abalone and enjoyed his open water swims well into his 70’s.
He is survived by his wife Faye, Daughter Dr. Amber Richert, Son Justin Richert, Brother Lance Richert and Sister Tiare Richert-Finney.
