Herman Hon Fat Wat passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023 at the age of 93. Born in Honolulu, he attended Cathedral Grade School, St. Louis High School, and the University of Colorado Boulder from which he earned his pharmacy degree. He began his 55-year pharmacy career at Chun-Hoon Pharmacy and later at Malihini Drug. In 1971, Herman and his wife Virginia took over the ownership and operation of Sav-Mor Drug Stores and subsequently established Gulick and King Street Plaza Pharmacies, all of which they eventually consolidated and sold to Longs in 2006. His passion for the profession was evident throughout his career as he enjoyed mentoring aspiring pharmacists, was active in the Hawaii Pharmaceutical Association where he served as President, and was named Pharmacist of the Year for his professional contributions. Herman enjoyed visiting Las Vegas where he was an avid blackjack player. As a St. Louis alumnus, Herman was a lifelong Crusader sports fan, attending just about every football game they played, but his favorite thing to do was watch his grandsons in their various musical and sporting events. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Virginia; daughter Penny (Larry) Tong; grandsons: Lawson Tong and Lowell (Mariko) Tong; great-granddaughter Kendall Tong; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
