ALEXANDER "ALIKA" DOUGLAS JAMILE

Alex "Alika" Jamile, 83, passed away peacefully in his Hawaii Kai home on April 6, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Alex was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 14, 1939. His parents, Clifford Sonny Jamile and Helen Mileina Lukela Fanning both predeceased him as did brothers Clifford and Clem.

Alex attended Lincoln Elementary School, Kamehameha Schools, and graduated from Punahou School in 1958. In high school, Alex played football, basketball, and baseball and earned Punahou School’s Athlete of the Year Award in 1958.

After graduating high school, Alex attended the University of California, Berkley on a football scholarship and was on Cal’s 1958 Rose Bowl team. While attending Cal, Alex met his sweetheart Barbara Mullin of Long Beach, California and they were married for 62 years. They were proud parents of Wendy and Cliff.

Alex’s professional career spanned a number of industries and included jobs at the Hawaii Employers Council, Alexander & Baldwin, Matson, Young Brothers, Mid-Pacific Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and the Bank of Hawaii. Alex’s passion was serving as an officer and board member of the Moanalua Gardens Foundation (MGF) for over 20 years. In 2022, he received MGF’s highest honor, the Kukui O Lota award, for his fearless support and passionate advocacy.

Sports played an important part of Alex’s life as a student-athlete, a coach of youth and high school sports, and as an avid fan. He never missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren’s games. Alex loved playing golf with his friends and never turned down a game of cribbage.

Alex is survived by: his brothers Clinton and Winston and sister Tiare Miyasato; his wife Barbara; daughter Wendy (Jay) Farley; son Clifford (Teresa); grandchildren Kevin (Morgan) Farley, Matthew Farley, Joshua (Meg) Jamile, Tiare (Ephraim) Maiwiriwiri, and Alexis Jamile; great-grandchild Cashel Farley; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Alex was richly blessed by family and dear friends.

The Jamile family would like to give a special mahalo to Lee Hanta, RN and team of caregivers at Bristol home hospice for the compassionate care they provided Alex in his final months of life.

Services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hawaii Kai – 219 Lunalilo Home Road. Visitation begins at 3:30 p.m. and service to follow at 5:00 p.m.
