On Thursday, March 16, 2023, Mel Miyamoto passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. It was sudden, and way too soon for us, but he went in the best way possible. Earlier in the day, we gathered in his hospital room and he spoke to each of us, sharing words of wisdom and inspiration to his three granddaughters, cracking jokes, and even singing his favorite songs. But he was in pain and had been struggling with health issues for a while. He said what he needed to say, let each of us show him our love, then went to sleep a happy man. We were there for his last breath and we are confident that he felt our love. We should all be so lucky to go that way. Our family is grateful for the words of comfort that we have and will receive in the days ahead. Our dad was a lucky man to have so many friends and relatives that cared about him. Many of you have shared that he helped you in some way but that is what made him happy so we thank you for letting him be a part of your lives. Our dad was grateful and that is a great way to live. He lived his best life. Thank you! Mel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra Miyamoto, his daughter Michele, his son, Marc, and his three granddaughters, Marley, Macie, and Maya. He is also survived by his siblings, Jean Motooka, Allan (Dianne) Miyamoto, Dennis (Naomi) Miyamoto, Charles (Blanche) Miyamoto, Kathleen (Jerry) Uehara, and Susan (Wesley) Wong. Mel’s death was preceded by his siblings Raymond Miyamoto, Ronald Miyamoto, and Carol Miyamoto. Mel Miyamoto’s memorial service will be held on June 10, 2023, at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary. Visitation will begin at 5 pm and the service will follow at 6 pm.
