Carol Ann Kam Yen Chang, 77, passed away peacefully at Hale Ku’ike Pali, home for memory care, on November 16, 2022, after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Carol Ann was born to Ruth and Walter Chang in Honolulu, Hawaii — the eldest of four. She was a great help to her parents and grandmother Annie Chang, from whom she learned to bake such specialties as sponge cake and lilikoi chiffon pie — still known around certain parts of Kauai and Oahu. Carol graduated from Farrington High School. She eventually took accounting classes and found her way to W.E. Denison Corporation, a condo association management company, where she handled their books for more than 30 years until retirement. She lived in Kalihi for most of her life, accommodating extended visits from her nephew Martin and family pets Sheila (cat) and Miki (dog). She enjoyed knitting and sewing: children in the family were often gifted a homemade quilt from Auntie Carol. She moved in with her parents in their old age, taking on the role of primary caregiver until she was no longer able to do so because of her illness. She enjoyed watching theatre and opera, traveling (often in groups with friends and family), PBS, singing classes, reading, baking, spending holidays with family (including full days of cooking), finding seasonal decorations and ornaments at Goodwill, and watching the Late Show with David Letterman. Carol is survived by her siblings and their families: Dennis, his wife Mabel and son Martin; sister Arlene (John) Purbaugh; and youngest brother Brayson. Funeral service will be held at First Chinese Church (1054 S King St) on Saturday, Feb. 25. Viewing (cremation urn only) will be at 10 am, followed by service at 10:30. Lunch will be served at 12 pm at Legend Seafood Restaurant in Chinese Cultural Plaza (location to be confirmed). 3 pm burial at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe. Flowers are appreciated. In lieu of donations to the family, please consider a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association (please specify "in memory of Carol Ann Chang").
