SHIRLEY MAE KAUANOE MANICAS
Shirley M. K. Manicas passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2022, after a long and adventurous life. She was born in Laie on June 16, 1932, to Annie Hosea and Samuel Mahana Kauanoe.
In the late 1940s and 1950s, she danced the hula professionally on the mainland and in Europe. She belonged to the Ahahui Kaahumanu, Chapter 1.
While performing in Buffalo, New York, she met and married her husband, Peter T. Manicas, in 1960. They returned to Hawai’i in 1988. After her return, Shirley, called "Ti" by all, taught in the DOE’s Kupuna program for many years. She was very proud of her teaching and the opportunity to pass on to younger generations her knowledge of the Hawaiian language, lore, and culture.
Her husband, son and daughter preceded her in death.
A private ceremony is planned.
