Lyle G. Phillips Jr., grew up being called Bud rather than Jr. by his mother Christine (Andersen) Phillips to avoid confusion with his namesake, father Dr. Lyle. He attended Hanahou’oli School, moving with most of his classmates to Punahou. He graduated from Punahou in 1957 after a short stint his Jr. year at New Mexico Military Institute for being a bit kalohe’. He married Brenda (Miller) Eakes, graduated from Cal Pali San Luis Obispo in 1963 slightly delayed by call up to Army Nat’l Guard due to the Cuban Crisis. They raised 3 children together in Kaneohe. Lyle G. III of Kaneohe, Dana (Darryl) Roberts, Dale (Laura) Phillips. Dana has 3 children Kealoha, Zeli & Kekoa. Dale has a daughter Jennifer who has gifted us w/4 great-grandchildren & a son Ryan. Lyle moved back to his family’s home in Manoa in 1980 leaving HECO to form his own company Phillips Pacific Equip. Lyle sold the firm to a competitor in 1983 to rejoin HECO. Traveling to Hawaii island to assist cousin company HELCO as part of his job reminded Lyle how much Honolulu had changed, so when offered a position at HELCO on Hawaii island in 1994 he jumped at the chance. He always said, “Hilo is the Honolulu I grew up in”. He married Mary Begier in 1989 she moved to Hawaii island with him thinking that this would be a short 2 year experiment and then “we would go back to being normal”. That was 27 years ago! Lyle was so impressed with the Masonic service when his father Dr. Lyle passed away that he became an active member of Hawaiian Lodge on Oahu, serving as Master in 1990, later joining the Kilauea Lodge in Hilo, serving as its master in 2000 and then Grand Master of Masons for the State of Hawaii in 2003-2004. He was also an active member of the Shriners, Shrine Club, York Rite, Jesters. The family asks that all donations in lieu of flowers be given to the Shriners Hospital for Children-Honolulu, 1310 Punahou St., Honolulu, HI 96826. Celebration of Life on Oahu will be held at the Hawaii Yacht Club starting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16. There will be a Masonic Service held on Hawaii Island at a date to be announced.
