MICHAEL ARTHUR WIESNER

After a courageous battle with cancer, Michael (Mike) Arthur Wiesner, died on Wednesday July 21, 2021 in Honolulu at the age of 70. He was a beloved friend, teacher and fearless activist who taught at Mid Pacific Institute for 36 years. He dedicated his life to challenging his students to think independently and advocate for social justice. His joy came from travelling through Europe, visiting friends in far off lands and sharing stories of his travels upon his return. Sans a cell phone – he recounted his trips with colorful commentary, in lieu of photos or social media posts. He was always ready for a political debate, a provocative discussion, or sharing the significance of the latest book he was finishing, which would reveal some nugget of history to be relished. He loved old movies and TV, a good burger with his beer and room temperature tap water with dinner. He would follow up a statement that seemed oddly out of place with…"that was a joke"…after which we would all nod, smile… and laugh together.

Michael served in the military during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his sister Arlene Dayboch and brother Craig Wiesner. He is pre-deceased by his mother and father, Muriel and Herbert Wiesner.

Michael requested to be cremated. He and his sister will visit his favorite European cities where his ashes will be scattered in the places that gave him joy and where he will forever rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following charities: Innocence Project, Amnesty International or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
