JERALD KUNIO AOKI

77, passed away on March 3, 2021. Born in Hilo, Jerald graduated from Hilo High School and received his Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Hawaii. He pursued his dream of becoming a fighter pilot at the US Air Force Pilot Training Program in Chandler, Arizona, flying the T-37 and T-38 jets. Determined to engage in combat, he performed as one of the top students; however, the Air Force deemed he was too valuable to be lost in combat and, instead, used his skills to instruct. He received a 4-year assignment as an instructor pilot there instead of combat duty in Vietnam. Jerald joined the Hawaii Air National Guard in 1972 flying the F-102, F-4, and F-15 jets, protecting the skies of Hawaii. "Fang" retired as a fighter pilot from the Hawaii Air National Guard attaining the rank of Colonel. Soon after, he flew for Aloha Airlines for the remainder of his pilot career.
Jerald fulfilled his dream of becoming a fighter pilot and continued to pursue his never-ending bucket list of golfing, traveling, skiing, fishing, renovating his home, and raising vegetables. He enjoyed attending the UH Football games and watching his grandson on the USC Football team.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine (Shibuya) Aoki; son Andy Aoki; daughter Terri (David) Miyamoto; four grandchildren; sister Barbara Fumie Miyazono; brother Harold (Annie) Aoki, and half-sister Lenore (John) Virgo. Private and military services held.
