BASSIL I. DUNN
On December 14, 2020, Bassil I. Dunn of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away at the age of 90. Bassil was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was a blessing to all his family friends.
Bassil was born on May 25, 1930, in Culver City, CA, to Dan and Phyllis Dunn. After graduating from Iolani School in 1948, Bassil attended the University of Denver. From 1952 to 1955, he served in the US Armed Forces. He returned to Oahu to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Hawaii, where he later received his teaching certificate. Before entering the field of education, he worked as a property manager for the City & County of Honolulu. In 1963, Bassil accepted a position teaching social studies at Kalakaua Intermediate School, where he met his future wife, Harriet Kuroyma.
In 1964, he and Harriet married, and in 1993, they both retired from teaching at Kalakaua. Even in his retirement, Bassil continued teaching Aikido at Manoa Aikido Club, where he was a black belt instructor for over 50 years. Additionally, he was active in non-profit work serving as treasurer for the Korean National Association, Kook Min Hur.
Bassil was preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald. He is survived by his wife, Harriet; children: Randell (Laureen), Hugh (Joanna), and Maureen (Jason); six grandchildren, and brother Arthur (Cyndie).
His family extends their most profound appreciation to all whose unconditional love brought him comfort, joy, and hope across the peaks and valleys of life.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family memorial service was held at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary, followed by a private interment service at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
