HOKUALA KARI JOHNSON

Hokuala was born in Honolulu on November 9, 1978. She passed away on July 2, 2020 at the age of 41. Born and raised on O’ahu and Hawai’i Island, Hoku attended Punahou School and graduated in 1997. She attended Colby College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Policy and passionately rowed for the Colby Crew Team. She was a dedicated Board Member for the Hui Nalu Canoe Club for many years and held a strong love for paddling. Hoku worked in various positions for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the past 16 years. Prior to that she worked for the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. All of the work that she did reflected her deep passion for protecting ocean resources and supporting the indigenous host culture, whether that be Hawaiian, Samoan, or Chamorro. Hoku was a loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She had a way of brightening up a room with her smile, warm kolohe personality, and strong work ethic. Our time together was much too short, but those times were priceless and memories of Hoku will be etched in our minds forever. We love you Hoks. May you rest in peace. Survived by wife, Lasha, daughters, Kau’iahiwa and Kaiolohia, father, Terry, mother, Charlene, and brother, Keoni.
