Age 73, son of the late Herman and Julia (Kekahuna) Kama, died peacefully at his Waimanalo home, October 15, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Luana Na’mi (Mahoe) Kama; his daughters: Lysa K. Kama-Carr (Mark), Kahalenani L. Kama-Pele (John), Lyah K. Kama-Drake (Michael), Pomaika’inameaapau M.M. Cordeiro (Christopher) and son, Kahale Kolomona Mahoe (Jennifer) and brother William "Bill" Kama of Honolulu. He had 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Herman Kama retired from NavFac Hawaii, formally Public Works Center, Pearl Harbor after 38 years of continuous service. He started his career as a merchant marine with the Military Sea Transportation Service, aboard the Longview (T-AGM3), a missile tracking ship, Pacific Region. He retired from the Fort Kamehameha Waste Water Treatment Plant at HAFB, Hawai’i as a Machinist.
A proud graduate of Kailua High School, Class of 1965, he was named undisputed ROIA State Football Champion, All-Star varsity center, in 1964. A "jack of all trade, a master of all," a giant among men and a man of many talents. He was an avid diver/fisherman at an early age with the ocean at his front door. He loved music, a musician in his own right. Caring for his yard and his garden was his peace and quiet, his zen. Food was his passion. He loved to cook and the kitchen was his domain.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, in-law and friend. He was compassionate, loyal and fair with all who knew him and had the pleasure of his company. He was a happy-go-lucky, people person. His famous cheer was, "Nev-a Drink A-lone". He always appreciated LIFE, understood the "dash".
A private funeral was held at home with all those who loved him and could be there to say their "good-byes". The last rites was given by his Kahu, Dr. Douglas Wooten of Kaumakapili Church. A "Coffee Hour" memorial service is planned at his home thru the month of November. Contact Luana, at 808-927-8072. All condolences can be sent to 41-210 Pa’upahapaha Place, Waimanalo, Hawai’i 96795
