Mary Chiyoko Hashiro, 92, passed peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2020, in Honolulu. She was born in Yokohama, Japan. In Japan, Mary was employed as a secretary at Storage Division, Yokohama Engineer Depot, a U.S. Army installation located in Sagami, Japan.

In Honolulu, she started work at The Hawaii Times, Ltd. Later on, she worked at Radio Station KOHO as a sales representative and then became sales manager. Upon retirement in 1992 from Radio Station KOHO, she enjoyed traveling with husband Stanley to places such as Europe, Russia, New York, Canada, Korea and Japan.

Her love for Japanese calligraphy led her to study calligraphy in Japan, to form her own business called Shienkai of Hawaii, and to becoming an instructor of Japanese calligraphy with her professional name as Shokyoku Hashiro. She was a member of Hawaii Bijutsuin (Hawaii Art Academy). She also taught and demonstrated calligraphy at the Japan-America Society of Hawaii. To gain greater experience and wider exposure to calligraphy, she and her students participated in the All American Japanese Calligraphy Competition held in Los Angeles, California from 1996 through 2004, receiving several awards.

She is survived by husband Stanley, sons Ronald and Gary (Kim); grandchildren, Jason and Kaylynn. Also survived by sister Tsuneko Ogata (husband Matsuo) of Japan.
