Richard Wah Ngit Ching went to be with the Lord at the age of 1O1 on September 18, 2020. He was born at the time of the Chinese Moon Festival, September 9, 1919, in Waihee, Maui. He later moved with his family to Honolulu, graduating from McKinley High School in 1937.

He served in the US Army until 1946, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant after which he worked as Benefit Payments Supervisor, Hawaii State, Department of Social Services for 30 years before retiring in 1968.

Richard adored his family and enjoyed traveling the world, gardening and sharing his plants, vegetables and flowers with his family and friends. He also enjoyed his daily walks throughout the Kaimuki and Waikiki neighborhoods. He was skilled in carpentry, painting and plumbing. Richard’s passion for gardening came from his father who owned a taro farm in Waihee, Maui.

Though a quiet man, he was able to connect with people with his warm smile. He appreciated and used the talents and gifts God had given him.

In his early adult life, Richard was associated with the See Dai Doo Society and later with The First Chinese Church of Christ where he served as head usher and a member of the Church Board, Soong Tao Men’s Fellowship and offering committee. He also served for 17 years as Treasurer for the church’s annual luau committee.

Richard was predeceased by his parents Wah See Ching and Sit Ung Lee, his first wife, Rose Ho Ching and his siblings, Irene Lee, Robert, Francis, Martha Ing, Paul, Ellen Sen, Beatrice Goodenow, Walter, Leonard and Amy Wong.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley T. Ching, daughter, Gwendolyn (Arthur) Wong, and sons, Rodney (Theresa) Ching, Randy (Gale) Ching and Brian (Jean) Tom, along with 8 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.
