Funeral Notices

Age 93, died peacefully, surrounded by her immediate family, on October 5, 2019, in Honolulu, HI.

Marion was born on July 1, 1926 in Berlin, Germany, to parents Zalman and Frieda Waksman. She emigrated to British occupied Palestine in 1936, fleeing the Nazi regime. She met the love of her life, Giveon Cornfield, in high school. They were married in 1947 and had a uniquely close marriage.

While an adolescent Marion lied about her age so she could volunteer as a medic for the Magen David Adom (Red Cross) and the Irgun underground movement. She taught Hebrew both in Israel and then in Montreal, Canada, where she moved in 1952. She and Giveon founded several classical music record labels, including Baroque Records and Orion Master Recordings, first in Montreal and then in Los Angeles.

Lifelong ocean swimmers, Marion and Giveon developed a love for Hawaii. They spent much of their free time in Honolulu, where they founded the Honolulu Scrabble Club in 1972. She and Giv moved full time to Honolulu in 1988. Following her retirement she spent many years volunteering as a mediator for family services.

Marion is survived by her husband, Giveon, of Honolulu; her son, Eitan Cornfield, of Port Hope, Ontario; her daughter, Eleanor Cornfeld Melton, of Santa Barbara, CA, and grandchildren Charlotte Cornfield, Joseph Cornfield, O. Eugene Beaird, and Joel Beaird.

At Marion’s request there will be no funeral service. We wish to thank the providers at Straub Medical Center, Bristol Hospice, and skilled nursing staff at Kalakaua Gardens for their superb care. We thank her many friends and family members throughout the world for their kindness and support.
