Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center Environmental Restoration Program Five-Year Review Wake Island Airfield
Public Notice – The Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) Environmental Restoration Program Office announces the beginning of the Five-Year Review process for Wake Island Airfield, Wake Atoll. This process will document whether the remedies implemented at CD005 (Wilkes Asbestos Landfill), OT010 (Peacock Point Burn Area No. 1), OT012 (Installation Road System), OT013 (Scrap Metal Pile No. 2 and Burn Area), and ST032 (Runway Staging Area Underground Storage Tanks) remain protective of human health and the environment. The remedy selected for Site CD005 in the November 2016 Record of Decision (ROD), for Site OT013 in the September 2011 ROD, and for Site SD032 in the January 2015 ROD is Land Use Controls. The remedy selected for Site OT010 in the December 2011 ROD is Excavation with Off-Island Disposal. The remedy selected for Site OT012 in the July 2012 ROD is Excavation, Ex Situ Treatment, and Off-Island Disposal. This will be the first Five-Year Review for these sites.
The Department of Defense recognizes the importance of public participation in the PACAF Environmental Restoration Program and encourages your involvement. If you have any issues or concerns about Wake Island’s cleanup program, or if you have direct knowledge regarding the remedies, the Air Force would like to talk to you. The Air Force requests that comments for the Five-Year Review be provided by January 16, 2019. Another public notice will be issued informing the community that the review is complete.
