SYLVIA W. BALDWIN
89, of Kailua died August 17, 2018 in Honolulu.
She and her family moved to Kailua in 1959. She worked as a substitute teacher, encyclopedia salesperson, secretary, and realtor, before becoming, at age 61, a U.S. Immigration Inspector until retiring at age 74.
She was known for her wit, kindness, and eloquent writing, volunteered for many organizations, paddled for the Lanikai Canoe Club into her 80s, tandem sky-dived on her 80th birthday, and traveled widely. The day before taking ill, she walked on Kailua Beach as usual.
She is survived by her children: Branden Johnson (Oregon), Hunter Johnson, Melissa Johnson (Hawaii), and Mark Johnson and wife Lexa Grutter (Australia). Donations in her name can be made to Hawaiian Humane Society or Planned Parenthood.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
