Nelson Osamu Yoshioka, Sr., passed away on July 31, 2018, at the age of 86. Nelson was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of 61 years, Myrtle, a nurturing father to his children, Nelson, Jr., and Darlene, and an adoring grandfather to his six grandchildren. Nelson was born on April 10, 1932, in Honolulu, to Tsunesuke "Harry" and Tsuruko Yoshioka.
After graduating from McKinley High School, he attended the University of Oregon on a swimming scholarship, and later transferred to the University of Hawaii, where he was Captain of the UH Swim Team for 2 years. He graduated with a degree in Education, and worked for the Department of Education for more than 30 years, rising to the positions of Athletic Director at Kaimuki High School, Vice-Principal at McKinley High School, and later Vice-Principal and Principal at Farrington High School. Nelson also coached basketball and softball. He coached the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team at University High School to the inaugural Division A Championship Title in 1965. He built the Kaimuki High School’s Boys’ Varsity Basketball team into a perennial basketball powerhouse from 1965 to 1971. He coached the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team at University High to the State title in 1984. In 1979, he helped coach the Girls’ Varsity Softball team at University High to the State title.
After retiring from the DOE, Nelson focused his energies on the things he loved: his family, golf, singing, and all sports. Nelson sang at many public events and taught karaoke for over 20 years. His favorite song was "The Hawaiian Wedding Song," because his graceful wife joined him on stage dancing the hula. Along with his wife, Myrtle, Nelson is survived by his children, Dr. Nelson, Jr. (Dr. Cheryl), Darlene (Matt) Tsukazaki, his six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brothers, Masato (Yukiko) and Lawrence (Dorothea), sisters, Ethel (Paul) Uemura and Ellen (Walter) Kim, and sisters-in-law, Margaret (Richard) and Mildred (Fred).

Services to celebrate Nelson’s fulfilling life will be held on Thursday September 6, 2018, at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. Visitation at 5 p.m. Service starts at 6 p.m.
