CONSTANCE BERNADETTE AKAMU, "BERNIE" Age 86, of Hilo died June 12. Born in Hilo to Antone and Constance Souza, Bernie graduated from Hilo High School and worked for the landmark Palace Theater in Hilo. Later, she joined First Hawaiian Bank as a teller, was promoted to branch secretary and became a customer consultant. She retired from the bank 31 years later. Her retirement was a fulfilling one, as she golfed frequently and traveled throughout the world. Bernie also found time to earn a black belt in Aikido. As an active member of New Hope Church Hilo, she regularly volunteered and provided assistance for the church’s senior ministry. She is survived by her son Brendan R. Akamu. Her life will be celebrated at two services: in Honolulu at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Avenue, on August 4 (visitation at 10:30 a.m., service at 11 a.m.); and in Hilo at New Hope Church Hilo 840 Kupulau Road, August 11 (visitation at 10:30 a.m., service at 11 a.m.). Aloha attire suggested. Flower leis are requested in lieu of floral arrangements.
