CHARLES EDWARD LABERGE, JR.
83, of Pearl City, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 7, 2018. Born on November 20, 1934, in Springfield Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Charles and Alice (née Lebourdais) Laberge. Charles was preceded in death by his lovely wife Chieko (née Yamauchi) Laberge. Married on July 11, 1958, they spent 58 years together until her passing on December 28, 2016. He was also predeceased by his sisters Alice Chevalier of Horseheads, New York, and Beverly Legault of Hudson Falls, New York.
A career Navy sailor, Charles joined at 18 and retired as a Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer (HMC) in 1976 after 23 years of active service. His duty stations and deployments took him to exotic locations across the world, including service in Viet Nam, and eventually landed him in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He met his future bride at one of his first duty stations in Yokosuka, Japan. After his retirement from the Navy, for a second career, Charles worked at Hawaii Escrow and Title, where he fully retired as Chief Title Officer in 2005. Charles was particularly fond of his grandchildren, and closely followed their school careers and accomplishments. A favorite author was Clive Cussler. But amongst his greatest enjoyments was travelling with his wife, especially to Las Vegas, where Chieko always seemed to have the Midas touch.
Survivors include his three children, Marie Laberge of Honolulu, HI; Anthony Laberge and his wife Karen, of Silverdale, WA; and Naomi Laberge Bechmann and her husband Bill, of Cincinnati, OH; and four grandchildren, Kyra Bechmann, Neil Bechmann, Stephanie Laberge, and Kimberly Laberge; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews, both in the U.S. and Japan.
A service with full military honors will be held for both Charles and Chieko at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on June 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., where their ashes will be interred. The Laberge family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Memory of Charles Laberge to Lanakila Meals on Wheels, at 1809 Bachelot Street, Honolulu HI, 96817 or https://www.lanakilapacific.org.
