ALAN TILDEN SANBORN
November 14, 1936-March 26, 2018
Alan, 81, was born in Hilo and lived in Hawi, HI where his father managed Empire Theater until World War II. His father, John (Jack) Sanborn and mother Janet Aitken Sanborn, took Alan and baby brother Peter to Buffalo, NY in 1942 to live with his maternal grandparents for their safety during the war. Upon their return to Oahu in 1945 Alan attended Jefferson Elementary and Punahou class of ’55. He left for college from his paternal grandfather’s Hanalei home by wading in the ocean to sail to SF on a returning Trans Pac sailboat as crew.
He obtained his Business Degree from University of Colorado at Boulder and his Architecture degree from University of Washington. He was a partner in Sanborn, Cutting Associates and later had his own Sanborn & Associates firm. He was awarded an AIA Emeritus.
Moving to Kauai in 1978 he worked for a developer and also did specifications and building inspections. Alan returned to Oahu in 1988 and worked for the State of Hawaii as an architect at DAGS until his retirement in 2000. Alan love sailing, landscaping and traveling in later years.
Survived by wife, Patricia Westfall Sanborn of 25 years. Daughters: Deborah (Matt Everling) Sanborn of Oregon; Kini Hanson, of Oahu; Elizabeth Zanos, of Oregon and hanai daughter Donna (Todd) Friesner, of Michigan. Sons: Alan James (Lindi Phillips) Sanborn, of California and George (Derek Kidd) Mitchell, of Oregon and predeceased son Anthony Mitchell. Brothers: Peter (Lynda) Sanborn of Nevada and J. William (Susan Moss) Sanborn, of Kamuela, HI. He also leaves 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with another on the way.
His ‘Celebration of Life’ will be held April 22nd at 3:30 at the Lanikai Park Pavilion with field parking off Kaiolena Dr. No flowers and casual attire. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
