Oahu native Toshio Moritsugu passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospice on February 27, 2018. He was 92.
Born in Heeia on April 2, 1925 to Yasuichi and Yoshiko Moritsugu, he leaves behind his wife, Dorothy (Hoshide), artist daughter Alison, filmmaker son Jon, brothers Sadaji and Roy Moritsugu, and sisters Florence Miyashiro and Alice Arakaki.
After attaining a B.S. at The University of Louisville, followed by an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University in organic chemistry, he returned to Hawaii to accept a position in the sugar technology and engineering department at the Experiment Station, a then world-renowned sugar research center of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association. His exceptional research on sucrose crystallization and the steps involved in the production of raw sugar led him to be recognized as one of the top experts in his field. He supervised the analytical lab, wrote many scientific papers, and was flown around the world as a consultant. These travels included locales such as India, Australia, Mauritius, South Africa, and Europe. He was a member of Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Honor Society), AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and the American Chemical Society.
A family-oriented man, he was a wonderful, loving father who contributed so much to his children. His patience and gentle kindness vastly enriched his daughter’s and son’s upbringing, and he rejoiced in their successes and gave support during the low points.
He was the perfect partner in life for Dorothy, and upon their retirement, they traveled the world together, drinking up life and enjoying 32 Elderhostel/RoadScholar programs around the world.
Toshio’s life experiences have been digitally archived in 25 video interviews by Densho, an organization which documents the oral histories of families affected by the incarceration of Japanese and Japanese Americans during WWll, one of whom was his father.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
