Dolores Asae Kaiwi, 88, of Kailua, a retired registered nurse for the Department of Health, passed away on February 7, 2018 at home. She was born Asae Hori on May 11, 1929. She was 1 of 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. The Hori family lived in the Waialae-Kahala area, where Kahala Mall now stands. She is survived by sons, Patrick, Christopher, Stephen (Mona) and Francis; daughter, Helene Kaiwi; brother, John Hori (Nancy) and sister, Mary Shimomura (Stanley), both long-time residents of Los Angeles County; and by five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mom graduated from Kaimuki High School, and later graduated from St. Francis Nursing School. Mom and Dad moved with their young family from Honolulu to the new subdivision of Keolu Hills in Kailua in the late 1950s, before the Pali Tunnel was built. Around 1966 Mom and Dad moved the family to another new subdivision, called Maunawili Park, where they raised their family.

Mom worked briefly as a registered nurse at Castle Medical Center when it opened in the early 1960s. Most of her nursing career was with the Department of Health, where she retired in 1989.

Mom was a great cook and baker, always trying out new recipes. Her bread pudding and corn bread were well known and loved by players and families involved with Kailua Little League and Pop Warner, as well as Kailua High School. Mom loved all sports. She was a supportive and ever present fan of her children and grandson and she attended football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball games. She attended the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Mom also loved to travel, visiting Japan several times, Hong Kong, China, Australia at least twice, and many trips to the Mainland where she spent time with family, and also visited the National Parks.
