U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completes
Five-Year Review Reports for Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii

The Army has completed two five-year reviews of remedial actions (environmental cleanup) implemented at Schofield Barracks, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The purpose of the reviews is to determine the remedial actions’ continued protectiveness of human health and the environment.

The Schofield Barracks Five-Year Reviews are two separate reports: one for Operable Units (OUs) 2 and 4, and one for the Southern Pistol Range East (SPRE) and the Garden Gulch Pistol Ranges (GGPR). The OU 2 remedy addresses trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride contaminated groundwater through the implementation of wellhead treatment on water supply wells located at the Schofield Barracks. The OU 4 remedy addresses a former landfill used from approximately 1942 until 1967 through improvements made to the landfill cover, additional monitoring requirements, and land use controls. The SPRE and GGPR remedies address small arms training in these areas during the 1940s that resulted in lead-contaminated soil at both sites and the presence of munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) at SPRE. The remedy at the SPRE consisted of the removal of lead-contaminated soil and MEC; the remedy at the GGPR consisted of the removal of lead-contaminated soil.

The Army has completed these five-year reviews as required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund, and the National Contingency Plan. The reports document the methods used for the review, and the findings and conclusions based on a records review and site inspections. No identification of issues occurred during the reviews therefore remedial actions for the remedy were determined to be protective to human health and the environment.

The signing of the reports occurred on November 7, 2017. The reports will be available no later than the end of December 2017 at the information repository located at:
