DOUGLAS LEE BOYER 08-25-1932 to 12-19-2017 It is with great sadness that we announce that Doug Boyer passed away quietly in his sleep. Born in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1940’s his family moved to California, first to Los Angeles, then to Napa. While in high school in Napa, Doug was a star in the theater group and on the rifle team. It is also where, at the age of 15, he met the love of his life, Norene Rodgers. Also while in high school, Doug was one of many young men who lied about their ages, in his case to join the National Guard. While in the Guard he was sent to Aberdeen Proving grounds, where he learned his future trade, to be a gunsmith. In January of 1951 he and Norene were married in Reno, Nevada. He owned Boyer’s Sporting Goods in Napa for many years, then ran a business in Los Angeles, coming to Hawaii in 1976 to help set up the Army Museum of the Pacific. Although they came over here on a 6 month contract, both Doug and Norene fell in love with Hawaii, and decided to open the Military Shop of Hawaii in Waikiki, where the shop was operated for over 25 years, eventually moving to Sand Island. As one of the founding members of the Hawaii Historical Arms Association, he was active in the club to the very end. In recent years he was semi-retired, selling. He will be missed by family, friends in Hawaii, and customers from around the world. He is survived by his son, Ron Boyer of Los Osos, California, and daughter, Michele Boyer of Honolulu and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, mother, sister, brother, and his love of over 60 years, Norene. The Hawaii Historical Arms Association will hold a Celebration of His Life at their March 14th meeting. Doug had requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a favorite charity.
