BERNARD GEORGE FREITAS December 9, 1955 – November 4, 2017 Bernard was the first and only son born to Lillian and Bernard Freitas. He passed away on November 4, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Growing up in Hawaii he liked to tinker with mini-bikes, motorcycles and would go diving as a young man. He was an alumnae of Damien Memorial High School class of 1973. He played football and entered track and field events. He excelled in shotput and discus where he placed first and second in these fields for the duration of his high school years. He won the High School State Championships in 1973 breaking previously held records, an achievement which earned him a spot at the 1973 National AAU Junior Olympic Championships. His love for his sport led him to numerous coaching positions at his alma mater, Waianae High School and finally at Green Valley High School in Las Vegas. After high school, he attended the University of Hawaii and worked many years as a bouncer at Infinity Night Club in Waikiki. He was a self-taught ukulele player. Even away from home, Hawaiian music remained a constant companion in his life. It was through Hawaiian music that he met Charlie Pride, they were inseparable and married in 1989. They eventually moved to Las Vegas and made it their home. Charlie passed away in 2013. Bernard is survived by his 2 sisters, Bernadette Keliiaa and Antoinette Freitas; one niece and a nephew (passed in 2015) and 2 grand nephews. The Freitas family extends their warm aloha and mahalo to all friends and family who shared in Bernard and Charlie’s life. Any monetary gifts collected in his memory will be donated to the Green Valley High School, Track and Field team.
