PAULINE LIN CHANG Pauline (Pu-mei) Lin Chang, 99 (Chinese 100), passed away on October 12, 2017. She was born in Beijing, China, on May 10, 1918. As one of only a few female students, Pauline graduated from the "Harvard" of China, Tsinghua University, with the Grand Prize in Chemistry and the goal of becoming a medical doctor. Pauline and her husband of 55 years, Hawai’i architect and entrepreneur Sam Chang, lived in China, Taiwan, Japan, and Okinawa before settling in Hawai’i in 1958. At age 45, Pauline began teaching Chinese at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, "adopting" her students as her second family. After 25 years, she retired as a tenured full professor and co-author of a Chinese language textbook. She wrote classical Chinese poetry to express her love of nature and the grandeur of the universe. Pauline was an active member and deacon of the Chinese Lutheran Church of Honolulu. She also donated to numerous charities as her mission in retirement. Pauline is survived by daughters Peggy and Vicki; sons Karl, Kenneth and Henry; 8 grand- children Dorothy, Cathy, Howard, Alec, Justin, Garrett, Calla and Sonia; and 3 great-grandchildren Mathew, Olivia and Nathanael. Pauline was very proud that all five of her children attended Ivy League schools. Pauline’s memorial service will be Saturday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chinese Lutheran Church of Honolulu at 1640 Liliha Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Chinese Lutheran Church of Honolulu or a charity of your choice.
