ELLA CHAN LIN FONG LAM At almost 96, Ella Lam passed away peacefully at home, with her family on Oct. 7th. She was the 7th of 16 children, born Nov. 29, 1921 to Elizabeth Alina Say and Fong Hing, a renowned Honolulu merchant. As the 2nd eldest daughter, she helped to raise 8 younger siblings, and followed her mother’s example with a lifetime of service in her church, as with family, friends and work associates. A McKinley High graduate, Ella’s first job was at Hormel Meats, and after Commercial school and during WWII, she worked at Hickam Field under Major General Ramsay. She was later hired as a court reporter by Honolulu District Court’s Judge Steiner, who said that she was the quickest transcriber with no errors. She retired after 50 years with the State Judiciary and was the first woman to be appointed as District Court Administrator of the 1st Circuit. Ella was preceded in death by her parents, 9 siblings and 8 in-laws. She is survived by 6 siblings: Leonard, Audrey, James, Lorraine, Mildred and Kenneth; 5 in-laws; her 100 year old husband Clarence WH Lam; 1st son Ronald YK Lam (Juanita Summers) 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; and 2nd son Gerald Nalikolauokalani-ke’alohilanikikaupe’aokalani-a-paki YC Lam (Dina Bodenschatz). Along with many nieces and nephews, we will all miss her kindness, unique inspiration and wisdom. Memorial Service will be Fri. Nov. 3, 2017, 10:30 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1560 So. Beretania St. In lieu of flowers, please donate to either Amvets Hawaii or your charity of choice.
