GERRIT JUDD IMAIKALANI EVENSEN Joyful, loving, goofy, brilliant, caring, fully committed to making the world a better place … these are ways many have described Gerrit Evensen, who passed away at sunset on July 28th, 2017. Gerrit, born February 16, 1989 and raised in Kaneohe, Hawaii, was a beloved son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew and friend who, while taken from us far too soon, lived a full and meaningful life in the 28 years we shared with him. He was a lover of plants, people and the planet, always seeking ways to share his knowledge and passions with everyone whose lives he touched. His fascination and love of plants started on his family’s property, Maka’alamihi in Kaneohe, where he developed his lifelong beliefs in integrating our gardens and landscapes with the natural world. Gerrit began his horticultural studies at Windward Community College and graduated magna cum laude from Oregon State University, but his quest for knowledge didn’t stop there as he researched plants constantly and corresponded with colleagues all over the world. Gerrit’s other passions included hiking, surfing, all kinds of music, and dogs. He leaves behind parents Carl and Stacy, sister Lei, an extended family and many friends. Tragically, Gerrit’s girlfriend, Heather Riley, also died with Gerrit. While devastated by their loss, our families will forever remember their beautiful souls and zest for life. Please join us at a beachside celebration of Gerrit and Heather’s lives on Saturday, August 12th at 8am at Kalama Beach in Kailua. We love you Gerrit and will do our best to keep your dreams alive.
