BERNIE SCHNEIDERMAN Passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on 8/3/17. Raised in Passaic and Clifton, New Jersey, he was active in scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 13. He was also the first in his family to attend college, obtaining a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD in physics from the University of Connecticut. Bernie worked as a naval analyst for over 17 years, primarily at various locations at Pearl Harbor. His final 20 years of employment were as a Civil Servant with SPAWAR Systems Center, where he managed a large organization focused on a variety of government contracts. Bernie retired in 2006 at the age of 70, after furthering the careers and improving the lives of hundreds of direct reports whom he loved so dearly. Bernie was active in multiple organizations. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Hawaii Research Corporation for eight years. He was an active Jewish temple member, serving on the Board of Temple Emanu-El, first as Membership Chairman and then as Vice President. Bernie always lived life to the fullest. He and his soulmate and wife of 24 years, Sue, visited a multitude of countries on several different continents. He enjoyed running, competing in a myriad of races that included several marathons. Later in life, he walked around the entire island of Oahu with a friend, 10 miles at a time, and then came back for an encore performance on the island of Maui. His greatest joy was his family, as he traveled often to see all of his children, and after he could no longer travel, his Hawaii reunion with all of his children and grandchildren became an annual event that he cherished dearly. Bernie is remembered as a man who truly cared about and helped people, approached life with a positive attitude and a sense of humor, and served as a role model to all. Bernie is survived by his wife, Sue, daughters Sandi (Dustin Cross) Schneiderman, Marci (Mike) Risner, and Ashley (Brett) Shaffer, son Barry (Mary) Schneiderman, and grandsons Ben, Sammy, Noah, and Danny. Donations in Bernie’s memory can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
