GERALD MARVIN MEREDITH, Ph.D. Gerald Marvin Meredith, Ph.D. was born on February 1, 1931 in Oakland, California. He died peacefully in his sleep at his Manoa home on June 25, 2017. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii. He was the University of Hawaii’s first and only "Evaluation Officer." At his 2010 retirement, he was Interim Director of the Office of Faculty Development and Support at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He was a personality-social psychologist. He published numerous journal articles in the areas of Japanese-American acculturation, personality measurement, and the improvement and evaluation of instruction. He was a fellow of the American Educational Research Association and the Association for Psychological Science, a member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Honor Research Society, and had been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa honorary societies. He was an associate editor of Psychological Reports for many years. In the 1970’s, he made numerous trips to Korea, first as a researcher on a team formed by the East West Center and later taking student study groups to Asia. From these trips he developed a love of the Korean culture and people which he shared with his wife. Together they also shared a love of travel, visiting museums, stately homes, castles and medieval towns, and dogs. Under his leadership, a system for anonymous student evaluation of instructors was developed at UHM which eventually became an online system. The results are often used as data for personnel decisions and a means of recognition of good instructors. He especially enjoyed his role as the staff advisor to the university committees making annual campus and system wide awards for outstanding instruction and service. He was married to Connie G. W. (Wong) Meredith. They have three sons, Gerald M. Meredith (Michelle Rudoy Meredith), Gregory M. Meredith, and Peter B. Meredith (Imas Mayasari) and six grandchildren: Jordan, Adam, Marley, Max, Malia and Emma. His friends and family will say farewell at Moanalua Bay, Hawaii Kai across the street from Roy’s Restaurant, on Saturday, August 12, 2017, starting at 3 p.m. to sunset.
