MORDECAI HUNT HUDSON, JR. 88, of Waianae, passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 18, 2017 in Honolulu. Mordecai was born in Frankford, Delaware; served in the United States Marine Corps; and was a retired federal firefighter stationed at Hickam Air Force Base. On April 10, 1949, Mordecai married Ruth Michiko Yamamoto and lived many years in Waipahu where they brought up their children. In retirement, he and Ruth moved to Waianae where he started Hawaiian Orchid Nursery. Every day at 4:30 p.m., it was pau hana time and he could have his beer and snacks. He was an avid and knowledgeable orchid grower for most of his life in Hawaii and was the Honolulu Orchid Society’s Orchidist of 1968; he was also a Channel 16 UH sports fan, especially volleyball. Mordecai also believed in assisting others by being a member of the Hawaiian Lodge, Honolulu York Rite Bodies, Aloha Shriners and Honolulu Scottish Rites. He was Ruth’s sole caregiver for many years after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Mordecai is survived by children Mordecai Hunt III (Mary), Sharon Lee (Berton) Kato, and Ronald James (Patricia); seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; sisters Helen Murray, Jacqueline Tingle, and Shirley (George) Fisher; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Ruth Michiko, parents Mordecai and Helen Hudson, Sr. and sister Jane "Betty" Lynch. Private military ceremony and inurnment were held on July 28, 2017 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, where Mordecai and Ruth are now together again, this time forever.
