NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING AND AVAILABILITY OF PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE PEARL HARBOR NAVAL DEFENSIVE SEA AREA MUNITIONS RESPONSE SITE The Navy announces a public meeting at the Oahu Veterans Center (1298 Kukila Street, Honolulu) at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, to discuss the Proposed Plan for the Pearl Harbor Naval Defensive Sea Area (NDSA) Munitions Response Site (MRS) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. The Pearl Harbor NDSA MRS is located off Iroquois Point, Oahu, Hawaii, and consists of approximately 1,933 acres of submerged area. The site is approximately 0.58 miles from the shoreline and extends seaward on both the eastern and western sides of the Pearl Harbor Entrance Channel to an approximate depth of 120 feet of sea water. The Pearl Harbor NDSA has been investigated to determine what types of cleanup actions are needed to reduce risks related to Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) remaining from past training activities. MEC includes unexploded ordnance (UXO), and discarded military munitions. The Proposed Plan summarizes the background previous investigations at the NDSA, discusses potential cleanup objectives, remedial alternatives, provides an analysis of the remedial alternatives, and identifies a Preferred Remedial Alternative. The Navy has issued this Plan to invite public involvement in the process of selecting the final remedy for the site and to fulfill the requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act and the National Contingency Plan. On November 29, 2017, the Navy will begin a 30-day public comment period for the Proposed Plan. The public is encouraged to attend the public meeting on November 29, 2017, where the plan will be presented. Verbal and written comments may be provided at this meeting.
